In September 2005, Breakthrough House entered into an agreement with Kansas Rehabilitation Services (KRS) to provide supported employment services to clients referred to Breakthrough House by the local KRS office. Supported employment provides people with mental disabilities pre-employment training, a job in an integrated work environment in the Topeka or surrounding area, and continuous support on that job. What began as a part-time effort in February 2006 became a full time program June 1, 2006. Initially, we anticipate that the program will add 10 to 15 people per year to the Topeka/Shawnee County workforce. As the program grows, job development staff and job coaches will be hired and trained. The job developers will partner with community employers in securing and carving out job opportunities that are beneficial to both employee and employer. Job coaches will work closely with potential employees to assure that their abilities and desires match an employer’s needs, develop assistive technology and transportation strategies, develop a natural support network on the job, assist in on-the-job training, and provide ongoing problem solving support throughout the employee’s work experience to insure a successful employment relationship.
