EMERGENCY AID PROGRAM

EMERGENCY AID PROGRAM PROVIDES EMERGENCY AID SERVICES FOR THOSE WITH SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS

WHY EMERGENCY AID?

It has been estimated that the severe and persistent mentally ill population in Topeka is at least twice the number of the national average. This group of individuals often lacks the skills to advocate on their own behalf. They go without food, shelter or utilities due to a lack of knowledge of who to contact, or where to go for help in emergency situations. These individuals are often risking rehospitalization when attempting to deal with these situations alone.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This is where the Emergency Aid Program at Breakthrough House, Inc. comes into service. The Emergency Aid Program is an advocate for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. The program offers short-term emergency assistance to help consumers problem solve through present emergency situations and possible similar, future situations. Education of existing community resources is discussed with consumers and if appropriate, additional referrals to other agencies are made. The Social Security Payee Program is available for consumers who are required by Social Security or wish to have someone manage their benefits.

WHO CAN RECEIVE ASSISTANCE?

The Emergency Aid Program offers assistance to residents of Shawnee County who are over the age of 18 years old and have been diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness. Each person is treated as an important part of our community, thus the degree of need is evaluated on an individual basis. A brief interview is conducted to determine what a person’s needs are in order to best resolve the current emergency situation. Usually a loss in income, no income or having expenses beyond a persons’ means necessitate receiving Emergency Aid assistance.
